Who are the
Cathars?
High on the sacred mountains of the French
Pyrenees lay the remains of the last Gnostic schools. The temples of the Cathars,
maybe the last Suncult or Solarcult in Europe.
They were sacred people who understood the spirit of the
land.
The temples are built high on the mountain
tops, built on specific rock to take full advantage of the telluric
forces that rise up through the rock and into the temples. The cathars, Cathari in
Greek, meaning ‘pure’, practiced tolerance and personal liberty, we
see in their teachings a close affinity with the ancient
Druids.
The people seemed to relish in their
teachings and tried in vain to resist the church and its secular
tyranny. This
ended with the burning of 205 Cathars at Montsegur in March 1244
AD. The Cathars were
branded heretics by the church and the wanton destruction of the
temples and the ancient sacred knowledge by the church leaves you
with a pain in your heart at their total disregard for these sacred
people. The Cathars
taught the teachings (gospels) of St John the Gospel of
St John is written
symbolically. This, the
church denies and reads it literally, as with the bible if you read
it literally, you are left in confusion. On the other hand, read
symbolically the gospel of St John is sublime
and any student of ancient knowledge should certainly look into the
work of Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet, especially her work ‘The Hidden
Manna’.
At the centre of the Cathars creed is the
concept of duality the material world vs. the spiritual. This means the battle
between good and evil, lightness or darkness or God and Satan. They believed the Great
Spirit created the twin forces of reality and unreality, it was
essential to understand this.
Everything is created out of goodness and love from the
creator. What we do
with these energies is up to us, used negatively they create
disharmony, unease, darkness or even evil.
Man according to the Cathars has 3 natures,
the body which is the abode of the soul, the soul which is the abode
of the spirit and the spirit, the divine
light.
If you dedicate your life to purity, and
practiced this, then the nature of man can undergo a
transformation. First
by death, not physical death (being born again as other religions
tout it), but by seeking the purity of the soul. This practice of purity will
lead your soul back to the divine light. This arduous pathway was
available and taught by the adepts or “parfaits” (perfects), this
knowledge was taught to all.
The cycles of reincarnation and karma were also taught. The Cathars kept everything
simple. (As it should
be)
The teachings could be taken into the
woodland and the sacred sites to be taught and understood. They used the limestone
caves in the area as initiation centers utilizing the strong
telluric forces of the area.
They ate vegetarian foods and kept strict vows of chastity in
keeping with the belief that it was sacrilegious to procreate. They believed Christ was
cosmic (so he couldn’t have been crucified) woman were equal to men,
marriage, baptism and communion were not recognized as valid
rituals. They did not
fear death; in fact they taught the people not to fear
death.
They had a ritual of the “The
Consolamentum”. At this
ceremony the adept or master would lay his hands on the head of the
believer who aspired to enter their community. What was said to have taken
place was a transmission of immense vivifying energy, anyone who
witnessed this would be totally inspired. This energy allowed the
recipient to ascend towards the light in
safety.
It was also said if a person was on there
death bed then the ‘Consolamentum’ would be practiced to allow the
spirit of the soon to be deceased to make the leap into the
cosmos. Their teachings
allowed the adepts to loosen there ties to the material world. The
Cathars took vows of poverty and chastity and practiced what they
preached with great humility.
